About Us

Waters Farm is 120 acres of watershed land given to the Town of Sutton by Dorothea Waters Moran in 1974. Her third cousin once removed, Bud Gurney, also of Sutton, made it happen. He was the founder of Waters Farm Preservation Inc.Bud After his recent death in 2007, his daughter, Pam Farnham, continues the family tradition.  Pam says, "Waters Farm is the benefactor of multiple generations of family members who donate their time for upkeep and events.  It is not uncommon to have three generations working side-by-side, and, in some occasions, four.  It is all about family and commitment."

Bud Gurney and his Faithful Dog She goes on to say, "Some people thought there wouldn't be a Waters Farm after Dad died.  But, we have a fabulous board of directors and tons of volunteers and we are doing well because he knew that we needed a succession plan and people rallied to that call.  It is the "us" that is getting it done.  Our strength is in our diversity and showing that Waters Farm is more than a "Gurney" mission.  People from all walks of life love the farm and are committed to Dorothea & Bud's vision.  He always stressed the 'we' and the 'team.' "The Farm is located midway between Purgatory Chasm/Sutton State Forest and Douglas State Forest in a trailed greenway that connects the two. Waters Farm Preservation, Inc., operates as a non-profit, and is governed by a Board of Directors. The Board's job is to ensure the continued preservation of this historic landmark.
